How to Cold Plunge: A Beginner's Guide to Building a Cold Therapy Routine.

Transform Your Wellness with a Cold Plunge Routine.

For centuries, people have embraced water as a method of healing, renewal, and transformation. Cold plunging, a practice once reserved for athletes, is now gaining popularity as a holistic wellness ritual that restores balance, clears the mind, and revitalizes the body.

By making cold plunging part of your regular self-care practice, you can experience benefits like improved recovery, relief of sore muscles, and mood enhancement. Beyond the physical, immersing yourself in cold water can help you release stress, enhance mental acuity, and allow you to meet life's challenges with grace and resilience.

If you're curious about how cold therapy can enhance both body and mind, this article will walk through the essentials — why it works, how to begin, and how to create a cold plunge routine that is both enjoyable and transformative.

How Cold Plunging Works: Wellness Benefits for Mind and Body.

If you're in search of calm, health, or renewal, this practice invites you to be present, embrace the moment, and emerge transformed. According to insights from the Huberman Lab at Stanford University, cold exposure can lead to improvements in the mind and body. Sounds good, right? Let's look at how regular cold exposure can elevate your wellness routine in just a few minutes a week:

Cold Therapy Can Soothe Aches and Aid in Muscle Recovery.

Cold plunges may help support muscle recovery by providing a cooling effect that can soothe tired muscles after physical activity. Whether you're recovering from a challenging Pilates session or unwinding after a long day, this practice helps your body reset, so you can return to the lifestyle you love feeling refreshed and restored.

Clear Your Mind & Find Your Center.

A few moments in cold water can help quiet mental noise, ease stress, and enhance focus. Here's how it happens: Based on a study published by The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, cold plunging can naturally boost neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine, which are linked to enhanced mood, motivation, and mental sharpness. Many cold plungers emerge with a sense of calm and well-being that remains with them for hours after they leave the water.

Enjoy More Energy to Embrace Your Personal Journey.

Cold plunges can invigorate your body by enhancing its natural cooling processes, helping you feel more alert and recharged. Depending on your personal sensitivity to cold and overall health, it may leave you feeling refreshed, transformed, and ready to step into your day.

Build Resilience Inside and Out.

Cold immersion is like a “spa retreat” for your nervous system. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health supports the hypotheses that by consistently exposing yourself to the cold in a controlled environment, you help your body and mind to adapt to stress more effectively. The study found that cold therapy could help with your overall stress response, allowing you to feel calmer and more in control in and out of the water. When done consistently, pushing past mental hurdles in cold water can help you navigate life's challenges more gracefully and easily.

Getting Started: What You Need for a Cold Plunge.

Before you take the plunge, be sure to set yourself up for success. Here's what you'll need:

  • A cold plunge tub – A dedicated cold plunge, like the Caldera Spas Emerge Cold Plunge, ensures optimal temperature control and ease of use.
  • An electrical connection – If using a powered plunge tub, make sure you have a proper electrical setup.
  • A robe or warm clothes – Your body will need to warm up after getting out of the water. Have a cozy robe, towel, or even a heated blanket ready.
  • Music and aromatherapy to enhance your experience – Set the stage for a transformative experience with soothing music and calming scents.

Creating a Cold Plunge Ritual That Works for You.

Incorporating cold plunging into your wellness regimen can provide incredible benefits — but the key is consistency. Whether you're an athlete looking to recover faster, someone seeking a mental reset, or just curious about the hype, starting small and building up gradually is the best and safest way to benefit from this refreshing wellness ritual.

Cold Plunge Q&A: What Beginners Need to Know.

What's the best way to start cold plunging?

Start slowly to allow your mind and body to get used to the cold water. Begin with water temperatures between 50-60°F and limit your first few times to 1-2 minutes (or less). As your body adapts, you can gradually extend your duration and lower the water temperature.

How long should I stay in the water?

The most important thing to do when cold plunging is to listen to your body. Everyone has a different tolerance to the cold, so don't compare yourself to any else. Give yourself time to get used to your new wellness practice. Here are recommended guidelines to follow when starting a cold plunge routine.

  • Beginners: Start with 1-2 minutes at a comfortable temperature (about 60°F).
  • Intermediate: Work your way up to 2-3 minutes as tolerance builds.
  • Advanced: Many plungers aim for 3-5 minutes and may do a couple of sessions, warming up in between.

Whether you're taking the plunge for the first time or the fiftieth, always pay attention to your body and don't push yourself. If you experience shivering, numbness, dizziness, headaches or neck pain, exit the water and allow your body to slowly come back to its normal temperature.

How often should I plunge?

Beginners should start with 2-4 sessions per week, gradually building tolerance. To start, aim for a total of 11 minutes per week to provide optimal benefits while minimizing the risk of overexposure. Consistency is key. Regular practice will help your body adapt and allow you to maximize results.

What temperature should the water be?

When it comes to water temperature, start slow and work your way down over time. Colder isn't always better — it's important to find the balance between maximizing wellness benefits and finding a temperature your body will respond best to.

  • Beginners: Start at 50-60ºF to allow your body to adapt.
  • Intermediate: Progress to 45-50ºF, as you become more comfortable.
  • Advanced: Some experienced plungers go as low as 40°F, but it's important to lower temperatures gradually and stay within your tolerance.

How can I make cold plunging easier?

Mentally reframe the experience by thinking of the initial discomfort as an opportunity to build calmness and resilience. Use slow, rhythmic breathing techniques to help you manage the shock and acclimate yourself to the cold. Deep inhales through the nose followed by slow, controlled exhales can help regulate your response. If the cold feels overwhelming at first, start at the higher end of the temperature range, around 55-60°F, and gradually work your way lower.

Plan a pleasant recovery ritual, such as wrapping up in a thick towel or robe, doing a few gentle stretches, or enjoying a warm cup of tea.

How can I enjoy my cold plunge safely?

Listen to your body. Cold exposure should challenge your mental and physical fortitude, but it should never feel overwhelming. Gradual adaptation is the safest approach. It's always wise to consult your doctor before taking on a new wellness activity.

  • Watch for warning signs. If you feel lightheaded, experience numbness, or start uncontrollably shivering, exit immediately.
  • Exit carefully. Cold water can affect coordination and muscle control. Move slowly and cautiously when stepping out.
  • Consider plunging with a partner or having someone nearby while plunging. This person can provide moral support or assist if you need help.
  • Warm up properly. Avoid sudden temperature changes immediately after plunging. Instead, dry off and change out of your wet swimsuit, put on a warm robe or comfortable clothing, and try some gentle movements like a short, meditative walk or yoga stretches to get your blood flowing.

Before starting any cold plunge routine, consult your doctor to ensure it is safe for you, especially if you have underlying health conditions, circulatory issues or sensitivity to cold exposure.

Transform Your Mind Body Wellness in Just Minutes a Day!

A cold plunge is more than a mental and physical reset — it's an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and embrace the present moment. Whether you're looking to reduce stress, enhance recovery, or cultivate resilience, making cold plunging part of your wellness routine can help you feel more vibrant, clear, and energized.

The Top 10 States for Yoga Lovers.

Yoga has become a way of life for many Americans, expanding well beyond its origins in India to become a popular practice that benefits both the body and mind. As more people come to appreciate yoga and practice it regularly, more yoga studios thrive in every state. The best states for yoga are those with ample opportunities for yoga lovers. To determine which states love yoga the most, we looked at the number of yoga studios per capita, the number of yoga instructors, and the level of search interest people have when it comes to all things yoga.

Here are our findings:

  • New York, California, and Colorado are the top three states for yoga lovers in the U.S.: New York has the highest search interest (76) and an impressive number of studios; California leads in the number of yoga teachers (5,514); Colorado has as many studios per capita as New York (2 per 100,000 people) and rivals California in search interest (62 versus CA's 61).
  • Miami, Washington D.C., and San Francisco have the highest number of yoga studios per capita: For every 100,000 people, Miami has 20 studios, Washington, D.C. has 18, and San Francisco has 16.

  • New York, Oregon, and Colorado residents are the most interested in yoga in the U.S.: New York's search interest is 76, Oregon's is 73, and Colorado's is 62.

The 10 U.S. States That Love Yoga the Most.

Yoga is an incredibly versatile activity because nearly anywhere you are, you can do your daily sun salutations and get into your flow. If you want a community experience and want to learn more poses — and how to do them correctly — yoga studios are a great option for your practice. The following states excel when it comes to the community aspect of yoga — that is, the number of studios, teachers, and people who are engaging in this amazingly healthy practice.

1. New York

New York isn't just a major cultural hub — it's also a major yoga hub, which is why it's ranked first on our list. The entire state, but particularly New York City, has a vibrant yoga culture, offering everything from traditional practices to innovative styles like rooftop and aerial yoga. The city's diversity and dynamic cultural scene make it a great place for yoga events, workshops, and teacher training programs.

Additionally, New York has the highest search interest in yoga of any state, indicating strong enthusiasm for this practice. As a final note, New York ranks number five in U.S. News & World Report's list of the states with the healthiest populations. It's not hard to imagine that the popularity of yoga plays a role in keeping the state healthy.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 3,160
  • Search interest: High (76)

2. California

California's yoga scene is thriving, which is why it secured the second spot on our list. Cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco have many studios with diverse yoga offerings, from traditional Hatha to cutting-edge hybrid styles. To put it in perspective, the state has 526 yoga studios and LA and SF are home to 63% of those studios.

Overall, it's also a great state for those who are seeking to learn. California has the highest number of registered yoga teachers of any state, so there are plenty of instructors to guide the Golden State's many students. Further, CA's sunny climate provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor yoga, especially in the southern half of the state.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 1 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 5,514
  • Search interest: Medium-high (61)

3. Colorado

Known for its enthusiasm for outdoor activities, Colorado ranks highly for yoga popularity. The Centennial State has a large number of yoga studios per capita, particularly in cities like Denver, which has 11 studios for every 100,000 people.

According to the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade, “We embrace a holistic approach to wellness, and the nation's wellness transformation starts here.” Colorado's interest in holistic health practices is reflected in its strong search interest for yoga topics. This high level of interest translates into a passion that makes it a top location for both residents and visitors looking to engage in yoga and wellness activities. Alongside its strong showing as the ninth healthiest state in the U.S., Colorado ranks number two when it comes to the healthiest states for older adults.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 1,695
  • Search interest: Medium-high (62)

4. Massachusetts

Massachusetts is a key state for yoga enthusiasts on the East Coast, thanks to its numerous studios per capita and high number of instructors. The presence of renowned centers like the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge adds to its appeal.

The Bay State ranks number one in U.S. News and World Report's list of the healthiest states, and for good reason. The state gets high scores on a number of wellness and fitness factors, including purposeful well-being, physical fitness, social health, and community. Simply put, Massachusetts prioritize wellness, and yoga is a big part of that focus. Plus, yoga is a perfect exercise option for a state where winters can be pretty cold, and the studio is a perfect place to warm up. This is especially true if you can find a studio that offers hot yoga classes — such as Bikram yoga, where the room is heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 1,593
  • Search interest: Medium (59)

5. Florida

Florida is a key player in the U.S. yoga scene, particularly due to its warm climate and beautiful beach locations, which are perfect for outdoor yoga sessions. The Sunshine State is second only to California in its number of registered yoga teachers, and it's home to the city with the highest number of yoga studios per capita, Miami.

From the myriad entertainment options to the hustle and bustle of a big city like Miami and the charged political atmosphere, Florida has a lot going on. So, it's no wonder that many Floridians choose yoga as a way to unwind. Plus, since Florida is a famous place to retire and live out your golden years in the sun, older residents benefit from the improvements in balance and circulation that yoga can bring.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 1 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 3,585
  • Search interest: Medium (50)

6. New Jersey

New Jersey is the most population-dense state in the country, and it's full of yoga lovers. The Garden State ranks as the second healthiest state in the nation and has an impressive number of yoga studios per capita for its 9.2 million residents. If you think about it, it's amazing that New Jersey is so stocked with studios. Yoga enthusiasts could attend classes in destinations like Philadelphia and the yoga capital of the U.S., New York City. But they can also remain in-state and make New Jersey a vibrant yoga hub in its own right.

Given that yoga has myriad therapeutic benefits, it should come as no surprise that New Jersey ranks number one in the nation when it comes to low rates of mental illness. The Garden State's fitness culture also sees it ranking as an incredibly healthy state overall. Wintery months and hectic traffic are likely to be part of the equation that drives residents indoors to do yoga and focus on their health.

  • Yoga studios per capita: 2 per 100,000 people
  • Yoga teachers: 1,603
  • Search interest: Medium (45)

7. Virginia

Studios across the state have a diverse array of offerings — featuring classes that range from hot yoga to a combination of yoga and Pilates — to appeal to all yoga enthusiasts.

Perhaps nothing encapsulates Virginia's yoga culture more than Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville. Located in the heartland along the James River near Buckingham, Yogaville is a destination for retreats, classes, and community togetherness. There are multi-level Hatha classes, a daily noontime meditation, vegetarian meals, and the interfaith LOTUS Shrine. It's also known for its natural, rugged beauty, with picturesque places like the Great Smoky Mountains State Park and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Portland is known for its progressive culture, bike-friendly streets, and health-conscious community. Local restaurants do incredible things with local produce from the Willamette Valley. Musicians, artists, and entrepreneurs love to call this their home. What's more, it's a great place for those who make the practice of yoga a part of their daily lives.

Portland offers an impressive amount of opportunities for yoga enthusiasts. With a population of about 652,000 and 29 yoga studios, Portland contains approximately 4 yoga studios per 100,000 people. This density reflects Portland's commitment to wellness and sustainability, as many studios emphasize eco-friendly practices and community involvement.

Top Yoga Studios in Portland

  • YoYoYogi: A vibrant studio known for its energetic classes and drive to make yoga accessible to anyone who wants to practice. Located in the Pearl District, YoYoYogi has over 300 options for classes, whether it's hot, restorative, or just flat-out “soul-shakin' yoga” that helps you find peace and your inner core.
  • The People's Yoga: Community-oriented studio with a focus on inclusivity and ensuring there are no economic barriers to practitioners. With locations on Hawthorn Ave. (southeast) and Killingsworth St. (northeast), The People's Yoga wants to break down the dogma and meet people where they are, providing Vinyasa and Hatha classes, as well as strength and mobility classes. They both are authentic and really believe in what they're teaching on and off the mat.”

9. Austin, Texas

Austin, the fourth-largest city in Texas by population, has a thriving live music scene, Tex-Mex to rival the best in the Southwest, and great outdoor recreation sites like Lady Bird Lake and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail. It's also home to one of the state's most active yoga scenes. With about 961,000 residents and 40 yoga studios, Austin contains about 4 yoga studios per 100,000 people.

The city's diverse culture and booming wellness industry, combined with a recent influx of migration from places like California have contributed to the increasing popularity of yoga in Austin. Many yoga enthusiasts have relocated to the area, and more long-time residents incorporate yoga into their daily routines.

  • Practice Yoga Austin: Known for its donation-based classes and diverse offerings, Practice Yoga is community-centered. Teachers include Adriene Mishler, whose Yoga With Adriene YouTube channel became a sensation during the pandemic, with over 12 million subscribers. Besides mindfulness, alignment, Yin, and Vinyasa classes, you can take part in many workshops and events.

The Top 10 Best States for Professional Yoga Instructors.

Looking at salary information, along with cost of living (COL) rankings, can provide insight into how desirable and lucrative it is to work as a yoga instructor in a particular state. The national average salary for yoga instructors is $69,965 per year, though some states offer much higher salaries in addition to a low cost of living. The cost of living is rated on a scale of 1 to 50, where 1 represents the lowest cost and 50 is the highest.

The 10 states with both the lowest cost of living and most competitive pay for yoga instructors are:

1. Indiana

The Hoosier State has great economic conditions for those who are seeking to open their own studio or take on a yoga teacher role at an established studio. It has the ninth lowest cost of living and instructors can earn a generous $70,995 per year teaching yoga.

Further, the state invested $487 million in community development in 2023, which grew to $12.6 billion through additional public, private, and nonprofit investments. Forbes ranked Indiana as the number one state to start a business in 2023. For a state where business is booming, the cost of living is low, meaning yoga instructors can live comfortably on a competitive salary.

2. Wyoming

Economically speaking, Wyoming is an interesting case and a fortuitous place for yoga teachers. It offers the 17th lowest cost of living in the entire country. Beyond that, the state's average salary sits at $60,610 per year while we discovered that yoga instructors earn $72,497 — about $12,000 more. This could be because it's a small state in terms of population and there aren't a ton of instructors to fill the demand for this role. Therefore, if you're certified and ready to help people practice, you're likely to earn a great salary that will go a long way in the Equality State.

3. Alabama

Amazingly, in Alabama, you can become a yoga instructor, spend 38% less than the national average on housing, and earn a wage that will see you living comfortably all around. Like Wyoming, the Yellowhammer State boasts a low cost of living — the 4th lowest in the nation — and yoga instructors are highly valued for their services, earning an average of $67,625 annually. You can fill an important niche as a yoga teacher in Alabama, and there's even the opportunity to live affordably on the coast, where you could lead outdoor sessions for people who want to connect with their inner yogi.

4. North Dakota

U.S. News & World Report has North Dakota ranking sixth in the nation when it comes to opportunity. It's also ranked 14th for its cost of living. This means yoga instructors have a great opportunity to teach in a state where the cost of living is relatively low, where they can earn $70,979 annually, and where recreation is a big part of the picture for many North Dakotans. The state's Office of the Governor reports that it led the nation in earnings in 2023, and there's a “laser focus on innovation.” As a yoga teacher, you can provide a restorative service to the people striving to innovate in the Peace Garden State and earn a good salary doing so.

5. Wisconsin

Dairy and beer aren't the only industries you can get into in Wisconsin. You can also make a good living teaching yoga to Wisconsinites who place a premium on recreation. Motorcycling, ATVs, boating, and fishing are big business here, but people can't always do them year-round due to cold winters. The state is ranked 20th for cost of living, but there's still demand for indoor recreation opportunities such as yoga, especially in a big city like Milwaukee. That could be a big reason why yoga instructors are able to make an average of $71,880 per year in the Badger State.

6. Pennsylvania

Although Pennsylvania sits square in the middle of the cost-of-living rankings at number 25, the average salary for yoga instructors of $76,102 annually is enough to make up for it. There are over one million small businesses in PA and it's the sixth largest economy in the U.S., meaning there are plenty of opportunities here for yoga teachers. This populous East Coast state has a lot of things yogis can enjoy, such as quality schools and gorgeous natural scenery. Longwood Gardens is particularly appealing, with its 40 indoor and outdoor gardens influenced by Italian, French, and English traditions.

7. Iowa

In Iowa, yoga teachers will find most of their opportunities in the capital city of Des Moines, which works hard to encourage economic development. But there's still plenty of room to branch out to smaller communities in this heartland state. It was rated the number one state for opportunity in 2021. That same year, CNBC reported that the Hawkeye State has one of the lowest costs of running a business. This is important for yoga studios that need to keep overhead low. Ultimately, Iowa's surprisingly low cost of living — 8th in the U.S. — mixed with competitive earnings — $65,074 per year, on average — makes this a great spot to teach yoga.

8. Mississippi

This Southern state consistently ranks highly as one of the most affordable places to live, with the 5th lowest cost of living in the country. And, perhaps surprisingly, the average yoga instructor can earn $63,972 each year — notably more than Mississippi's average salary, which ZipRecruiter reports is around $47,500 a year. Yogis can find a lot to enjoy in the beach towns along the Gulf Coast, where a laid-back pace translates perfectly to a yoga way of life.

9. South Dakota

The Mount Rushmore State is near the top for personal income growth and also has an impressively low unemployment rate in recent years. The thriving economy is reflected in yoga teacher's salaries here, an average of $67,082 annually, and also indicates that people may have more expendable income for services such as yoga instruction. Moreover, South Dakota has the 13th lowest cost of living in the country, which helps yoga instructors have some expendable income of their own. They can use it to visit the state's many natural attractions, such as Mount Rushmore and the Badlands.

10. New Mexico

New Mexico holds a special place in the nation for its scenic grandeur. About a third of the state is federally protected parkland and historic sites, such as Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands National Park. If you're a yoga teacher, the profusion of great outdoor sites pairs perfectly with the fact that you can earn a great salary of $69,096 per year. Given that the average salary in New Mexico is just over $62,000, yoga instructors are well-placed in the economic milieu. It doesn't hurt that New Mexico is ranked 19th for cost of living, either.

Finding Your Zen: Activities That Flow Well with Yoga.

Yoga can be incorporated into any lifestyle. Whether you're searching for a workout that strengthens your core or a contemplative self-care practice, there are flows for every mode. Further, the peace, restoration, and mindfulness you're cultivating don't have to stop at the mat. Certain activities are perfect extensions of yoga's core essence.

Soaking

It's no coincidence that hot tub yoga enhances the benefits of yoga by maximizing relaxation and coaxing out deeper stretches. Like yoga, soaking in hot water does wonders for the body and soul. A study from the International Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that thermal hydrotherapy reduces stress and encourages mental relaxation. Water immersion therapy improves blood flow and your ability to exercise. It can also reduce pain.

There are many ways to augment your yoga practice with the benefits of soaking in hot water. You can soak before or after your yoga routine — doing so beforehand will loosen you up and improve your ability to do stretches, as noted by the aforementioned study. Soaking afterward will enhance your relaxation. Try adding calming music, aromatherapy, and jets that massage your muscles. The study found that these things, in tandem with hydrotherapy, increase the body's healing capacity.

You can also take things up a notch by soaking in a hot tub equipped with the FreshWater Salt System. This all-natural, water sanitizing system uses salt to generate chlorine, meaning you're using fewer chemicals while enjoying more natural feeling water that is softer on your eyes and skin, while being easier to maintain. This isn't your only option, though. There are hot tubs to fit your budget and your yoga practice, whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner. You can also learn more about hot tubs and how they fit into your health and wellness routine.

Gardening and Eating Well

Gardening is much like the practice of yoga. Both activities involve cultivating focus and enhancing well-being. But as you concentrate on the plants and what they need — a balance of water, healthy soil, and sunshine — you find balance by stepping outside of yourself and caring for the world around you.

Gardening goes well with a yoga routine in so many ways. In the morning, you wake up with the sun to water your plants. You do your sun salutations or find your flow, getting balanced to move into the day with mindfulness. You clear your mind through breathwork and stretching, much as you clear the garden of weeds.

Further, you're growing plants that will nourish your body. Sitting down to a healthy post-yoga meal with those you love, and with food you've cultivated, is the essence of rejuvenation. As you combine this mindfulness of physical health with gratitude for the earth's amazing capacity to generate life, you grow closer to the essence of yoga.

Walking and Basking in Nature

The wonders of walking can't be overstated, and this form of exercise is the perfect complement to yoga. Yoga and walking could easily be viewed as two sides of one coin. Like yoga, walking can be meditative — and there is in fact a kind of meditation called walking meditation. This form of meditation is slow, even paced, and dedicated to a limited space. You focus on your steps and the flow of your movement to prioritize mindfulness and reduce stress.

Or, like hot yoga, you can use walking to get aerobic exercise and stretch your limbs. The health benefits of walking in this regard are numerous. It improves immunity, lessens joint pain, helps you maintain a healthy weight, and even lessens your craving for sugar.

Walking's versatility means you can stroll to the yoga studio or to a spot in nature where you engage your yoga flow. Do this on a regular, even a daily basis, and you'll find the compound benefits of walking and doing yoga will keep you young and energetic. Walk through the woods or a park and bathe in the glory of nature. All told, there are many activities that complement yoga, but the most meditative ones like soaking, gardening, and walking are natural extensions of the yoga way.

Methodology.

To determine the most yoga-friendly states, we focused on three main factors:

  • Number of yoga studios per capita: This indicates the number of Yoga Alliance registered yoga studios per 100,000 people, based on population data from the United States Census Bureau.
  • Number of yoga practitioners: This measures the total number of Yoga Alliance (YA) registered yoga teachers in each state.
  • Number of relevant Google searches per Google Trends data: Google Trends data provides insights into the topics that people are searching for. This data reflects the search interest in a topic. It measures how popular a term is in a particular place and timeframe in proportion to all other topics. Search data is normalized to allow for comparisons between different terms, locations, and time periods. The data is then ranked from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the highest level of interest in a term. If a term has a search interest of 100, it's particularly popular in that location and within that timeframe when compared to other topics.

All state and city population data was sourced from the United States Census Bureau, and yoga studio and instructor information was sourced from the Yoga Alliance registration directory.

When evaluating the best states for professional yoga instructors, we considered both the cost of living data and the average yoga instructor salary for each state. States with lower costs-of-living and higher salaries were included in our list.

Balancing Career, Family, and Self-Care With Tiana Masaniai.

With the arrival of her new baby girl, life just got even busier for Tiana Masaniai. As an actress, model, and DIY design enthusiast, the mother of two is an expert at juggling the demands of career, family, and home. And, thanks to her Caldera® spa, she's even able to carve out a little quiet time for reflection or catch up with her husband, Eddie.

With modeling gigs in exotic places, acting roles in TV shows and commercials, and a stylish home recently featured in Allure magazine, Tiana's Los Angeles lifestyle may sound like a dream. But in many ways, she and Eddie are no different from countless parents across the globe who work hard every day to complete the countless tasks and activities on their to-do list. With limited free time, Tiana depends on a regular self-care ritual that includes her hot tub to provide pockets of calm where she can dream, plan, and sometimes, simply breathe.

A Backyard Hot Tub Makes Calm and Comfort Easily Accessible.

For many moms, work and family obligations expand to fill every available moment. With a newborn baby, even a few hours of uninterrupted sleep feel like a luxury, and carving out time for a much-needed break may seem nearly impossible. That's why, when the children are asleep and mom finally has a few minutes to herself, a backyard hot tub can be the perfect escape. With a warm-water oasis just steps from the back door, stress relief and transformation are accessible and hassle-free.

During quiet moments, Tiana can take a timeout from phone calls and projects to immerse herself in the bubbling water of her Caldera Utopia® Series Geneva® spa and enjoy a comforting massage. Having a dedicated place to unplug and relax gives this working mom the chance to plan her next DIY home improvement or go over lines for an audition. And while multi-tasking might seem like the opposite of relaxation, for Tiana, her hot tub haven provides the perfect space for creativity and inspiration to flourish. In fact, these mindful moments in the hot tub not only make her more effective in her career on dry land, but also allow her to be fully present when it comes to her family.

A Warm Soak Offers Recovery and Reconnection.

In the evening, Tiana and Eddie often enjoy time together in the hot tub. Shared acting and modeling careers require that the couple stay fit and healthy, and their evening soak relieves stiffness and soreness while allowing them to spend quality time together. As they reconnect in their roomy six-seat spa, they like to move from seat to seat, taking advantage of the Caldera Hot Tub Circuit Therapy feature that targets each muscle group individually for the ultimate total-body massage experience.

"I didn't realize how many benefits would come with using a spa on a regular basis," says Tiana. "Being able to end the day with even 20 minutes in our Caldera spa has completely changed our ability to relax and recover on a daily basis."

Tiana Masaniani's husband, Eddie, enjoys a soothing soak in their Caldera Spa backyard hot tub.

"Our backyard has been a place that our family loves to spend time together," says Tiana. "But I also wanted to have a section that was specifically designated for us adults: an oasis that felt both beautiful and relaxing."

The couple have a talent for home improvements, having completed many stunning home and outdoor projects. The modern color scheme and sleek lines of their six-seater Geneva spa fit their design aesthetic perfectly, making it the ideal focal point for their beautiful backyard oasis. They've added a comfortable seating area along with lighting, a fire pit, and accessories to complete the look. For extra privacy, the couple expanded the wall dividing their home from their neighbors, which provided a canvas for an artful faux vine design to further enhance the space.

Life-Changing Investment in Wellness.

Tiana shared with us how having a spa has changed her life, inspiring her and Eddie to create a backyard oasis to enjoy as a couple and as a family. During the day, they even turn down the temperature in the spa so their toddler can splash around with mom and dad, and Tiana marvels at how the premium spa quickly heats up again for couple-time under the stars. The FreshWater® Salt System gets big points from the couple for being both eco-friendly and simple to operate, providing clear, natural-feeling water without fuss.

With today's busy lifestyles, it can be a struggle to find time to unplug and relax - but for this family and countless others, a Caldera spa is a haven that provides comfort, relaxation and rejuvenation, available whenever there's a quiet moment!

Exploring the Rise of Aquatic Exercise and Stretching.

With the growing number of specialized classes offered at public pools, swim clubs, and fitness centers, aquatic fitness is becoming increasingly popular. Thanks to the unique properties of water, participants can enjoy a safe and effective workout without some of the challenges that come with an outdoor or gym workout.

For example, the resistance you feel when moving in water makes workouts more challenging and can deliver a larger calorie burn in less time. Additionally, water's natural buoyancy supports muscles and joints so there's generally less impact and risk of injury than with land-based exercises. These low-impact benefits make aquatic exercise an attractive choice for seniors, individuals with joint issues, and those recovering from injuries.

Furthermore, the temperature-controlled environment of a swimming pool or hot tub makes exercise more comfortable in a variety of weather conditions - so it's easier and more pleasant to stick to your wellness routine.

Let's dive into the world of aquatic exercise to see why it's making such a splash.

Table of Contents.

1. What is Aquatic Exercise?

A woman sits in a hot tub with her legs partially above the water, stretching her hamstrings.

Aquatic exercise refers to cardio, strength-building, or stretching performed in water that's typically waist- to chest-deep. These low-impact activities allow just about anyone, regardless of fitness level, age, or swimming ability, to stay active and improve their health, strength, and mobility. Popular exercises include water aerobics, aquatic yoga, water jogging, and resistance training, each of which leverages the unique properties of water for a safe and effective workout.

Many strength-building water exercises, like walking in waist-deep water, depend only upon resistance. However, there are also fitness accessories available to help enhance aquatic workouts and target specific muscle groups, including water dumbbells, kickboards, resistance bands, and pool noodles. These tools are designed to enhance water exercise by adding resistance to make muscles work harder without adding stress on the joints.

When deciding on the type of aquatic exercise to participate in, consider the size of the hot tub or pool you have access to. For example, a large swimming pool in a gym or community center will have ample space for water jogging and large group exercises, while smaller home pools are well suited for walking in place, kickboard workouts, and strength training with water weights and resistance bands.

Buying a hot tub for your home is a great way to make aquatic fitness more accessible. A local hot tub dealer can help you find the right shape, size, and price range for your needs. While a hot tub's smaller size limits the range of possible exercises, its warm water and molded seats are perfectly suited for resistance workouts, gentle stretching, and yoga poses. Plus, the hydrotherapy benefits of a hot tub could aid muscle recovery, making it easier to stick to your active routine.

2. Top Benefits of Aquatic Exercise.

An older woman is stretching after a yoga session, holding a bottle of water in her hands.

Regardless of your fitness levels or goals, there are plenty of good reasons to give water-based exercise a try:

  • Exercising in waist- to chest-deep water provides low-impact resistance, so you'll burn more calories in less time while fully engaging your muscles.
  • Aquatic exercise is efficient, providing a cardio workout that also boosts strength, endurance, and flexibility.
  • Extreme temperatures won't get in the way of your fitness ritual. Regardless of the weather, your pool will keep you cool in the summer, and can be heated to keep you comfortably warm in winter. Even some hot tub models offer a cool water mode that can be used for exercising or cool water soaking.
  • The buoyancy of water supports your body, so you can work out harder with less impact and risk of injury than traditional land exercises.
  • You have plenty of options to choose from. Look for an aqua fitness class at your local gym or community center, work out in your pool with water weights and resistance bands, or have fun working on flexibility with hot tub yoga moves and stretches.
  • Aquatic exercise is refreshing and fun - you'll feel like a kid again while you work toward achieving your fitness goals.

3. Enhance Your Heart Health.

A mother and son are running towards a hot tub on a sunny afternoon.

Certain studies have stated that aquatic exercise may be helpful for patients who are suffering from Coronary Artery Disease. Regular aerobic exercise can lower blood pressure and improve markers of cardiovascular health such as exercise capacity, vascular function and heart rate variability. The buoyancy of water provides a gentle, low-stress environment for this type of activity, aiding relaxation and helping reduce blood pressure. Additionally, aquatic workouts burn calories, contributing to weight loss and decreased fat mass, which also supports lower blood pressure. This combination of benefits makes aquatic exercise an excellent choice for maintaining heart health.

4. Stretching in Water Keeps You Fit and Flexible.

Regular stretching is an important part of any fitness routine because it enhances flexibility, improves range of motion, and reduces the risk of injuries. As we age, it's important to keep joints and muscles flexible and healthy. Without regular stretching, muscles can shorten and become tight, with limited range of motion. This can impair the ability to participate in sports and other activities, and could increase the risk of joint pain, strains, and muscle soreness.

To stay flexible and mobile, it's best to commit to more than just the occasional stretch. Dedicating a few minutes each day to water stretching exercise in a hot tub is an easy and effective way to see consistent results. The warmth of the water helps relax muscles and increase blood circulation, while the water's buoyancy reduces strain on joints, making it easier to perform stretches safely. This winning combination of heat and buoyancy creates an optimal environment for enhancing flexibility, alleviating muscle tension, and providing the benefits of stretching in a comfortable, enjoyable environment.

5. Begin and End Your Session with a Stretch.

During aquatic exercise, your muscles are cushioned by the water, so you won't feel the impact in the same way you would if you were running or exercising on land. However, the muscles are still working just as hard against the water's resistance, which is why it's important to stretch before and after water-based activities. Perform dynamic (moving) stretches before your session to warm up and prepare your muscles for the exercises. Static stretching (where you hold the stretch) after your workout will do wonders to flush out lactic acid and soothe tight muscles, and if there's a hot tub available, a rejuvenating hydrotherapy massage will feel great while loosening joints and aiding muscle recovery.

6. Explore Popular Group Fitness Programs.

An older couple is relaxing in a bubbly hot tub.

For a workout that blends fitness with fun, check out one of the trending water-based fitness classes at your local gym or community pool. Popular aquatic fitness programs combine the low-impact resistance benefits of aquatic fitness with the social aspect of exercising with friends.

Aqua Zumba, a popular class for all levels, combines Zumba dance moves with water resistance, creating an energetic workout that's easy on the joints. For a more advanced option, Hydro Power focuses on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in the water, incorporating sprints, jumps, and resistance training to build strength and endurance. These programs appeal to a range of individuals, from those seeking a guided, low-impact environment for rehabilitation to exercise enthusiasts looking for a challenging alternative to their regular routine.

7. Water-Based Fitness for Everyone.

A mother, grandmother, and young girl are laughing together in a hot tub.

Aquatic exercise is a good option for people of all ages and fitness levels. Children and young adults will enjoy exploring new ways to stay fit and have fun in the water. For older adults, the water's buoyancy reduces strain on joints and lowers the risk of injury, making it a safe choice for those suffering from arthritis or osteoporosis, or recovering from surgery.

People with mobility issues, even those confined to a wheelchair, find exercising in water more comfortable and less intimidating because it supports the body and reduces the risk of muscle or joint pain. Water exercise is a safe, effective, and enjoyable way for everyone to keep fit and healthy.

8. Aquatic Exercise and Stretching: Getting Started.

If you're ready to experience the benefits of aquatic fitness and water stretching exercises, there are several ways to get started, from private pools and hot tubs to community centers and gyms. While a backyard pool is a bigger investment, hot tubs can be more approachable in terms of price and space. You can find local hot tub prices by contacting a local dealer, but whether you invest in your own water oasis or rely on a public option, the first step is easy: Just dive in!

Check YouTube for online tutorials or start with a few of the exercises outlined below. Wear a comfortable swimsuit that you can move in, some lightweight water shoes to avoid slipping, and don't forget to slather on waterproof sunscreen.

Once you've tried some simple exercises using the water for resistance, you might want to purchase some basic equipment like water dumbbells or resistance bands to enhance your workouts. Don't forget to modify the exercises as needed to suit your fitness level and goals.

If you prefer the comradery and structure of an exercise class to working out solo, a group water aerobics class might be the best choice for you. Check with your local community center, gym, or YMCA for available sessions.

If you're a senior seeking to try water aerobics or an aquatic group exercise class, contact your gym or senior center for information. Or explore your options on the Silver Sneakers website, which is a program that provides free access to gyms and fitness classes for eligible adults aged 65 and up.

9. Five Simple Water Exercises You Can Do in a Pool.*

  • Water Walking or Jogging: Walk or jog across the shallow end of the pool, with the water no higher than mid-chest level, keeping your back straight and using your arms to help with balance. This exercise will get your heart pumping and enhance core and leg strength.
  • Leg Lifts: Position yourself in front of and facing the pool wall, holding on the edge for support, and lift one leg to the side, then bring it back down. Repeat for a set of 10-15 reps and switch legs. This is an effective way to target hips and thighs.
  • Arm Curls: Holding water dumbbells, stand in the water with your arms at your sides. While pinning your elbows to your body, curl your arms up to your shoulders and then lower them back down. This simple exercise will work your biceps and triceps.
  • Flutter Kicks: Hold onto the edge of the pool or use a kickboard and extend your legs behind you. Perform quick, small kicks to work your core and leg muscles.
  • Water Bicycle: In the shallow end, lean your back against the pool wall, extend your arms along the sides for support, and pedal your legs as if riding a bicycle for a simple leg/cardio workout.

10. Stretching Exercises for Hot Tubbers.

A woman wearing a swimsuit is stretching her back in a hot tub.

Stretching in a warm hot tub does more than feel good. Warm water hydrotherapy can enhance the effects of stretching and improve flexibility and mobility.

Here are a few simple stretches to try.* For the best results, hold each stretch for at least 15-30 seconds per side.

Neck Stretch:

  1. Sit comfortably with your back straight and hands resting on your thighs.
  2. Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder.
  3. Repeat, leaning your head to the other shoulder.

Shoulder Stretch:

  1. Sit or stand with shoulders relaxed.
  2. Reach one arm across your chest and use the opposite hand to gently press the arm towards your chest.
  3. Repeat with the opposite arm.

Torso Twist:

  1. Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor of the hot tub.
  2. Place one hand on the opposite knee and gently twist your torso, looking over your shoulder.
  3. Repeat, looking over the opposite shoulder.

Quadriceps Stretch:

  1. Stand in the hot tub and hold onto the edge for balance.
  2. Bend one knee and bring your heel up behind you until you can touch it.
  3. Use your hand to hold your ankle and gently pull it towards you.
  4. Repeat with the opposite leg.

Calf Stretch:

  1. Stand facing the wall of the hot tub and place both hands on it for support.
  2. Step one foot back, keeping it flat on the floor and your leg straight.
  3. Bend your front knee and lean forward slightly to stretch the calf of the back leg.
  4. Repeat with the opposite leg.

These stretches can help improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall relaxation. Always move gently and listen to your body to avoid overstretching.

Backyard Design Ideas That Make a Big Impact

When considering home improvement projects, the reasons to invest in your property are more than just monetary. Homeowners who take on improvement projects are seeing benefits beyond increased home values, including things like better health, improved relationships and lower utility bills.

One area for improvement that might go overlooked is the backyard. While you might think your backyard is a lost cause due to limited space, lack of privacy and landscaping challenges, there are plenty of ways to add extrinsic and intrinsic value to your outdoor space.

Below, we've highlighted five of our favorite backyard design ideas that can make a big difference in your home, whether you're trying to completely revamp your outdoor space or just add an element (or more) to the existing area.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Outdoor lounging area with a grill. The area has comfortable seating, a grill, and a fire pit. The background is a lush green lawn.

As more studies show the benefits of spending time in nature, people around the world are moving their activities into the fresh air, if possible. Many of us have already put hours of thought and effort into a relaxing living area inside our homes, so why not extend the comfort of that indoor space beyond the back door?

Ryan Fitzgerald, Realtor and owner of Homes Raleigh, has seen this concept skyrocket in his clients' homes. "They're investing in quality patio furniture, installing outdoor kitchens, and even setting up weather-proof entertainment systems," he says. Adding temperature control tools - such as fans, misters or heaters - can extend the time you're able to spend outdoors and increase your return on the investment.

Fire Pits or Outdoor Fireplaces

An outdoor living area with a firepit. The firepit is surrounded by comfortable seating and a lush green lawn. The image is a great example of backyard design ideas that incorporate firepits.

Picture you and your family roasting marshmallows for s'mores over a crackling fire or catching up with friends as the flames of a fire pit keep you warm. Where are you? If you said "camping" (or anywhere other than your home), reconsider the possibility of having your own "campfire" right in your backyard.

Adding a fire pit or outdoor fireplace at your home can add ambiance, visual interest and new lounging areas for family and friends. While a fire pit is (relatively) mobile and less expensive, an outdoor fireplace is a long-lasting investment with countless design options. You can build in permanent seating surrounding the fire, or choose to set up lawn chairs or blankets when using the fireplace or pit.

Tiana Masaniai, actress and design specialist, considers an outdoor fireplace a dream addition to her backyard. "If I could splurge on any backyard item, it would be a large outdoor fireplace. I would want a tall stucco fireplace built up against the outer wall of my house," she says. "It makes for a great focal point of an outdoor living room. I would be out there all the time!"

Natural, Eco-Conscious Designs

Image of raised beds in a potager garden in a backyard. The beds are filled with vegetables and herbs. The garden is a great example of Eco-Conscious backyard design ideas.

With sustainability becoming more of a priority for individuals, corporations and organizations across the world, you don't have to look far to make a positive impact on the environment. More homeowners and design experts are making eco-conscious decisions during home improvement projects, and these choices are extremely approachable to the average consumer.

When selecting flowers and plants for your outdoor space, choose flora that's native to your area. These plants are the most suited to the environment, which means they require less water and upkeep. Luke Caldwell, designer and HGTV personality, likes to lean on trees native to his home state. "Because I live in Idaho, I love to use evergreens - that way the backyard stays green throughout the whole year!"

Using organic materials such as wood, stone and clay is a great way to easily incorporate natural elements into your space. You can even lean on reclaimed materials like recycled metal, glass or bricks for a less expensive (and eco-friendly) way to enhance the natural vibe of your backyard.

Fitzgerald has seen many homes with rainwater harvesting systems to cut back on water usage and utility bills. Rainwater can be used for watering lawns and plants, water features, composting and more.

Lastly, good lighting is key to a great outdoor space, but no one likes the wires, extension cords and plugs that come with it. Consider energy-friendly lights, like solar-powered options or switch out fluorescent bulbs for LEDs that draw much less power than alternatives.

Wellness Features

A man working out in an outdoor setting near a Caldera Spas' Utopia Hot Tub.

Self-care has never been more popular, and people around the world are investing big in their health, happiness and general well-being. Healthy living now goes beyond food and exercise, spilling over into mental health, recovery and sleep. Homeowners are making these lifestyles more accessible by adding wellness tools within steps of their back doors.

The benefits of hydrotherapy have been studied for years, showing physical, mental and relational health advantages. These feel-good benefits have led homeowners to invest in hot tubs that hit all three aspects of wellness. On the physical side, the high temperatures and buoyancy of hot tub water can aid in benefits like inflammation reduction, arthritis relief, faster muscle recovery and improved circulation. Mentally, Caldera spa owners are seeing reduced stress levels, better sleep, and more opportunities for meditation and reflection. Hot tubs are also a wonderful way to strengthen relationships with loved ones as you carve out time sans technology to talk, laugh, or simply be with each other.

(Read what real Caldera owners have to say about the wellness benefits they're seeing from their spas at home!)

Homeowners are also considering pools, swim spas and cold plunges for their own use right in the comfort of their backyard. These tools allow people to prioritize their health and well-being in as little as a few minutes a day.

Outside of water therapy, homeowners are reaping the benefits of building dedicated workout spaces, complete with exercise equipment, mats, fans/misters and some type of cover to provide sun protection and privacy. When combined with digital fitness classes and apps, this removes the need for public gyms and provides an accessible, private space to move your body whenever, however you want.

For a mental health focus, homeowners are considering "zen spaces" that provide a calming, quiet area to meditate, practice yoga or simply contemplate life without distraction. A zen space can be created by clearing ample space, eliminating clutter, adding pillows or yoga mats, using earth colors (greens, browns, tans) in decor, and considering a white noise machine.

Vertical Gardens

Woman relaxing spa side in chair reading a book

Vertical gardens are particularly useful in small spaces or urban areas with little privacy. Instead of creating plant or flower beds that span across a yard, build upward to save space and create dividers that define the outdoor living space. Jason Farr, founder and president of Aviara Pavers, is incorporating plenty of vertical gardens for his clients. "Vertical gardens create a great statement piece for any backyard," he says, and their versatility means the design options are nearly endless. Use reclaimed materials like wooden pallets, fence panels or bricks for an environment-friendly project; or purchase specifically designed vertical planters from Amazon, Home Depot or Wayfair.

As trends come and go, we believe these backyard design ideas will stand the test of time. Each one can create a timeless design that matches any climate, yard or style. Incorporate one (or more) of these designs into your backyard to create a personal haven for you and your family.

Stargaze from Your Hot Tub with Starry Night Soaks https://www.calderaspas.com/wellness-blog/stargaze-from-your-hot-tub-with-starry-night-soaks Mon, 15 May 2023 16:28:02 +0000 https://www.calderaspas.com/?post_type=wellness-blog&p=26928 This article shares tips on one of the best things to do in a hot tub at night: gazing at the galaxy above. Relax and let the bubbles take you to a whole new world as you soak up the stars!

The post Stargaze from Your Hot Tub with Starry Night Soaks appeared first on Caldera Spas.

At Caldera® Spas, we're always looking for fun ways to fit self-care and hydrotherapy into our days — and nights. That's why we're absolutely loving our new favorite end-of-day ritual we've dubbed the "Starry Night Soak." Want to give it a try? Wait for the sun to set, step into your Caldera hot tub and cast your eyes toward the night sky.

Whether you stargaze alone, invite your partner or include the whole family, everyone will emerge from the water feeling calm, centered and more connected.

Use these tips for the ultimate stargazing experience, both in and out of your hot tub at night.

Stargazing 101: The Basics.

  1. Check the Forecast: Stargazing is best done on a clear night, so check the weather forecast and try to avoid "cloudy," "hazy," or "overcast" nights. You can also check the humidity levels and dust or allergens that could be hanging in the sky, which also affect visibility.
  2. Turn off the Lights: Have you ever been camping in the wilderness or driving in the countryside, and been shocked at how many stars you could see? Where did they come from? Of course, all those stars are in the sky wherever you are, but "light pollution" in cities and suburban areas can make them harder to see. Before your stargazing session, reduce the surrounding light by turning off any indoor and outdoor lights, including TVs, screens and any other light sources.
  3. Schedule Stargazing Around the New Moon: Of course, hot tubbing under a big, bright, full moon is magical, but if your priority is the stars and constellations, you'll want the sky to be a little darker. The best time for a stargazing session is during each New Moon, which usually lasts about three days. When the conditions are right and there's no Moon to wash out the light from fainter stars, you can look forward to seeing thousands of stars highlighted in the dark night sky!
  4. Wait as Late as Possible: The best time to stargaze is when the sun is far enough below the horizon that it's not casting light into the sky. The darkest time of night is between midnight and dawn, which might not be practical for most people, but the later you head to your hot tub, the more stars you'll be able to see.
  5. Consider Time of Year: While you might prefer hot tubbing in more mild temperatures, the middle of winter provides the best opportunities for stargazing. Colder air tends to hold less moisture (which is better for visibility), and the longer nights provide more hours for gazing. Just be sure to grab your stocking cap for your head and hang a plush, warm robe next to the tub on a towel rack so you can wrap up in as soon as you step out.

What to Look For.

Gazing at the millions of endless stars can be relaxing and help you zone out - if that's what you're going for - but knowing what you're looking at can be educational and rewarding. Take advantage of a smartphone app to give yourself reference of what you're looking at. Below are some of our favorites!

Apps can guide your viewing experience, but did you know some constellations are only visible at certain times of year? Use the below guide for a seasonal breakdown of which planets, constellations, and other celestial bodies are visible each season in the Western Hemisphere.

Spring

Between March and May, look for constellations such as Leo, Virgo, and Ursa Major. You can also see planets like Jupiter and Saturn, as well as meteor showers including the Lyrids and the Eta Aquarids.

Summer

The warm nights of summer are the perfect time to observe constellations such as Scorpius, Sagittarius, and Cygnus, as well as the Milky Way. It's also easy to spot the bright lights of Jupiter and Saturn.

Fall

During this time, grab your telescope to observe constellations such as Pegasus, Andromeda, and Cassiopeia. Look out for meteor showers like the Orionids and the Leonids.

Winter

Beat the winter chill with a steamy soak, and while you're there, be sure to look for constellations such as Orion, Taurus, and Canis Major. You can also see planets like Venus, Mars, and Jupiter, as well as meteor showers including the Geminids and the Quadrantids.

Family Fun Under The Stars.

Stargazing with your family is fun and educational. Everyone will love finding their astrological sign, identifying the Big and Little Dipper, or being the first to spot a shooting star. If enthusiasm starts to wane, try one of these astrological themed games.

  • Try the classic ABC game with astrological themes. Start with the youngest family member, and go clockwise around the hot tub. Start with the letter "A" and name a celestial object that begins with that letter — like "asteroid." Then the next person has the letter "B" for Big Dipper, "C" for Capricorn, etc.
  • Name that space- or star-themed movies. Challenge yourselves to name as many movies or books with a space or star themes. Keep going until you can't think of any more! You can do the same with space- or star-themed songs.

Setting the Mood.

Many hot tubs come with sound systems, allowing you to really set the scene and enjoy some mood music! We curated two space- and star-themed playlists that are perfect for your Starry Night Soak.

We think you'll agree, stargazing from your hot tub can be a magical way to connect with the universe and your loved ones. We hope these tips help you to make the most of your stargazing efforts and enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

10 Tips for Creating a Backyard You Can’t Wait to Come Home to.

By: Rachel Ertman, Sr. Assistant Brand Manager, Caldera® Spas

Being on the Caldera Spas marketing team, I have the good fortune to spend every day doing work that I'm passionate about — sharing the benefits of hot tubbing so owners can experience the calm, well-being, and transformation a Caldera spa provides.

It should come as no surprise that I soon wanted a Caldera spa of my own! My husband was just as enthusiastic, and as a contractor, he was up for the challenge of creating a personal hot tub haven in the backyard of our new home.

I knew just what I wanted in a hot tub, so it didn't take long to settle on the perfect one, the beautiful six-seater Geneva® model from Caldera's Utopia® Series.

A smiling Caldera Spas marketing team member stands proudly next to a Utopia Series Geneva spa with a Java cabinet and Arctic White shell.

My beautiful Utopia Series Geneva spa with Java cabinet and Arctic White shell.

After deciding on the Utopia Series Geneva, we turned our focus toward designing the area around our spa. We wanted to create a special space that was beautiful, comfortable, and uniquely "us." We looked forward to spending hours in our new backyard, relaxing as a couple, enjoying family time, and entertaining friends.

As we went through the process, we came across so many great ideas that I had to share some. If you already own a Caldera spa, or are shopping for one, these tips will help you make your hot tub a special space that you won't want to leave:

10 Ways to Elevate Your Backyard Space

  1. Add a path to your hot tub. Like the frame around a picture, a path accents your hot tub and defines the space around it. Ours is made of concrete, and it not only looks great, but keeps our feet clean so we don't transport dirt into the spa water. You can also use flagstones, pavers, or any kind of hard surface. I don't recommend gravel though, because it can be rough on bare feet — ouch!
A modern backyard oasis featuring a sleek hot tub surrounded by a beautifully designed concrete paver patio. The pavers create a stylish and functional pathway.

Our concrete pavers make it so easy to get into our spa, whatever the weather.

  2. Play with outdoor lighting. Any landscaper will tell you that lighting provides a lot of impact for a small investment. We used a mixture of in-ground path lighting to illuminate the way to our hot tub and inexpensive string lights overhead for ambiance. We added some colorful lanterns at the steps of our hot tubs for a fun, personal touch.
  3. Create a seating zone to keep the conversation going. There's something about spending time together in a hot tub that encourages conversation. Setting up an outdoor couch or comfy lounge chairs nearby adds style to your space, and gives everyone a place to eat, chat, and relax.
A cozy and inviting outdoor patio with a covered seating area.

The comfy seating we added to our patio means that there's space for everyone in or out of the water.

  4. Add a fire pit. There are many options when it comes to adding a fire pit to your space. Whether you choose a portable gas or wood burning model (hello, S'mores), or incorporate a built-in into your design, you'll love sitting around a warm crackling fire after a relaxing soak in your hot tub.
  5. Invest in a cover lifter. When your hot tub is conveniently placed, you're more likely to use it every day. A cover lifter is an added plus and makes for even easier access. Caldera offers cover lifter options that allow you to effortlessly remove your spa cover. My favorite is the Prolift III — I'm a fan of its sleek, low-profile design, and smooth, gliding mechanism.
A luxurious Utopia Series Geneva spa with a sleek, modern design. The spa features a dark cabinet with a wood-grain finish and a white shell.

  6. Be able to accommodate sun or shade. For an outdoor space you'll enjoy year-round, make sure you have a mixture of sun and shade to protect you from the elements. Choose from hardscape options like a gazebo or pergola or go with an umbrella or canopy that can be easily raised, lowered and adjusted.
  7. Add decorative elements like soft blankets, pillows and candles. Go ahead, add a pop of color — accessories are the quickest, most economical way I can think of to personalize your space. Our goal was to make our backyard as welcoming as our living room, and I think we succeeded.
A spacious backyard with a concrete patio and a covered seating area. The patio features comfortable wicker furniture, potted plants, and a view of a lush green lawn.

I love that my patio now feels like an extension of my home!

  8. Add native plants for a lush, natural vibe. Plants, trees, and shrubs provide both beauty and shade, and when thoughtfully designed, can muffle street noise and create a sheltered, private space for your hot tub ritual.
  9. Bring out a table for al fresco dining. When the weather is balmy and the hot tub is bubbling, it can be hard to come inside. Enjoy the outdoors a little longer by setting up an eating area for morning coffee or weekend barbeques.

  10. Plant a small garden with your favorite plants, flowers, and vegetables. I love the idea of growing my own vegetables and herbs, and luckily, there are lots of easy ways to create a garden, regardless of how much space you have. Browse your local garden or home store for ideas.

If you've been looking forward to spending more time outdoors this summer, I hope these ideas will inspire you to create your own perfect space. Now that our backyard is (almost) complete, we find ourselves spending more time outside relaxing, both in and out of our hot tub.

I'm just loving sharing the details of my hot tub journey with you and look forward to sharing more insights in the weeks to come.

So, You Ordered a Hot Tub: Now What?

By: Rachel Ertman, Sr. Assistant Brand Manager, Caldera® Spas

Before I owned my Caldera® spa, I would often daydream about how I would use one. I pictured inviting friends over for dinner and capping off the evening with an impromptu soak session, creating a sacred "no-phone-zone" to connect with my husband, or my personal favorite, quietly slipping away from everyone and stepping into my spa for some much-needed self-care.

As a member of the Caldera Spas marketing team, fantasizing about hot tubs is a normal part of my job. So, you can imagine my excitement when earlier this year my daydream turned into a reality, and I became the owner of a Utopia® Series Geneva® spa.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing my hot tub ownership experience, in the hopes that it will help prospective hot tubbers on their own journey.

Creating Your Hot Tub Haven

Choosing the right hot tub is just the first step toward a wellness ritual that will provide years and years of calm, comfort, and relaxation. But once you've taken the leap and made your purchase, what comes next? Having recently become a proud member of the "Hot Tubbers Club," I want to share some of the most important factors I considered on the road to setting up my ultimate hot tub haven.

Outdoor patio with wicker furniture overlooking a hot tub concrete pad in a backyard.

Where Will it Go?

Finding the perfect place for your hot tub takes thought and planning. While every space is different, here are a few things to consider:

Creating a Private Oasis

For the most relaxing experience, your hot tub should be sheltered as much as possible from street noise and the eyes of neighbors. When selecting a spot for your hot tub, be sure to check all the angles - and don't forget to look up. Ideally the location you select won't be visible from the street or from your neighbors' second floor windows. If your space doesn't offer the privacy you desire, don't worry! Consider adding a pergola, large outdoor umbrella, gazebo, or take our approach by adding strategically placed trees and tall shrubbery.

Proximity to the House

When you're weighing options for where to put your hot tub, walking all the way across the backyard for a soak might not seem significant. But trust me, proximity to the house matters. I know from experience that if something isn't easy to use, you won't use it regularly. My husband and I wanted to be sure our hot tub was easy to get in and out of, without walking through wet grass or getting our feet dirty. Now, even though it might be rainy or cold outside, we never have to skip our daily ritual.

Maximizing Your View

What do you want to look at while you're soaking in your hot tub? When deciding on placement, it's a good idea to consider the seat configuration of your model. In my case, the Utopia Series Geneva model has a beautiful lounge seat. We positioned our spa so that the lounge seat has the best view, looking toward the trees.

Speaking of views, be sure to consider what you see from inside your home, as you look out at the backyard. At Caldera Spas, we believe hot tubs should be beautiful! One of the reasons I chose the Utopia Series is because of the new EcoTech® Plus cabinet features which include a modern black header, wood grain accent, stainless-steel trim, and integrated LED light bar. I love looking out at my backyard and admiring my new spa.

I admit it, I drive my husband a little nuts every time we buy a new piece of furniture or attempt to hang a picture or mirror. It's important that everything be placed just right and that can mean lots of repositioning and adjusting. But there was no heavy lifting required when it came to finding the perfect spot for our new spa - thanks to the Vision AR app by Caldera Spas. After I loaded the app on my phone, I selected the Utopia Series Geneva and pointed my phone at various spaces in my backyard. With a touch, I could visualize just how my hot tub would look in my space. I loved how the user-friendly augmented technology made choosing a model, trying out different color options, and deciding where the spa would go simple and painless. I was even able to snap a pic and send it to my husband to get his thoughts!

Enhancing Your Outdoor Space

Your hot tub haven can be designed to blend in beautifully with your backyard and reflect your personal style. Whether you're adding a spa to an already landscaped backyard or starting from scratch (or maybe you're somewhere in between, like me) you can be assured that your new Caldera spa will beautifully accent the space. Either on their own or with the addition of plants, hardscape and accessories, they are designed to enhance any landscaping style, from modern to traditional.

How Do I Prepare My Space?

Doing the Groundwork

Once you've found the perfect location for your hot tub, you'll need a structurally sound, level surface to put it on. You have some options here - you can choose a concrete slab, a deck, or a prefabricated spa pad. Whatever you decide, remember that a filled hot tub can weigh a great deal, so make sure the location you choose can support the weight. Our Pre-Delivery Guide and your local Caldera Spas dealer can help you with the necessary steps.

How big do you want the prepared surface under your hot tub to be? A rule of thumb is that it should be at least a little bigger than your spa's footprint. Our Geneva hot tub is 7'5 ft x 7'5 ft and we chose to pour a 12 ft x 12 ft concrete pad. This ensures that there will be plenty of space to walk around the hot tub so we can keep our feet clean.

Powering Up

While the requirements aren't complicated, there are some important safety codes that make it important to engage a professional licensed electrician. That being said, hot tub power requirements vary. While larger spas can require more power, some smaller hot tubs can run off a standard 110V source, reducing the installation requirements. For details about our hot tub electrical requirements, read page 10 of our Pre-Delivery Guide.

Considering a new hot tub? Understanding the Caldera difference can make the decision of what hot tub brand to buy easy. After that, it's all about choosing the perfect model for your space, family, and lifestyle. To make the decision easier, Caldera spas are grouped into three distinctive series, our luxury Utopia Series, value priced Vacanza Series, and the popular Paradise Series.

Our Paradise Series models have features to delight even the most discriminating hot tub buyer. With options ranging in size from the compact, three-person Kauai® to the roomy seven-person Reunion® and Salina® models, this series offers the unmatched comfort, design, and performance that Caldera spas are known for.

Natural Feeling Water That's Gentle on Skin, Eyes, and the Planet.

If clear, fresh, natural-feeling water (not to mention simple maintenance) are on your wish list, you can be confident in choosing a model from this versatile range. That's because each Paradise Series spa comes ready to use our patented Freshwater® Salt System

The FreshWater Salt System uses fewer chemicals than traditional water care, reducing harsh odors for softer-feeling water that is gentler on eyes and skin. With fewer additives needed, the water can stay clean and fresh for up to a full year before needing to be drained and refilled. This conserves water, saves money and reduces time previously spent on water care.

Spa Owners Speak Out About The Caldera Difference.

With 40+ years of experience, Caldera Spas is one of the most trusted hot tub brands in the world. With unparalleled comfort, rejuvenating hydrotherapy, and design details that delight the senses, these hot tubs check all the boxes. But don't take our word for it, read what real-life owners have to say about their Paradise Series spas...

With a hot tub in your backyard, you'll look forward to the daily ritual that melts away stress - leaving you feeling calm, centered and ready to tackle life's next adventure:

  • I Love My Tub

  • I bought the Kauai in November and use it six to seven nights per week. I work a lot of hours and am on my feet throughout the day. This hot tub relaxes me every single night. Having the jets work on my back, my calves, and my feet while I'm in the lounge chair is amazing. I can even move into other positions for upper or lower back jets. My hot tub is the best purchase I've ever made. I'm feeling and sleeping so much better. Thanks!

  • - Kauai Spa Owner, California -

  • I Wish I'd Bought One Sooner!

  • This is my first hot tub and it has been a great addition to my home. I use the spa regularly after the gym, or just to relax. I think the salt system really helps keep the water clean. It was definitely worth the extra expense. Our spa has a recliner seat and jets for just about everything - feet, legs, upper back, and lower back. We feel great every time we use it.

  • - Seychelles Spa Owner, Texas -

An inflatable hot tub can seem like a simple, inexpensive way to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. But when the initial novelty wears off, are you really getting the long term benefits you deserve?

If you’ve been seeing ads for inflatable hot tubs popping up everywhere and asking yourself “Why not?” Here are some things we hope you’ll consider before you click that “add to cart” button…

Experience The Caldera® Spa Difference that Provides Comfort, Performance and Design

Spend just a few minutes online and you’ll find there are a lot of hot tubs for sale, and retailers who want you to believe there are real reasons for buying an inflatable hot tub versus choosing a quality above-ground model.

As one of the most trusted spa brands in the world, we’re committed to delivering a spa that will continue to delight you and your family for years to come. And we stand behind that promise, by backing each one with our exceptional ComfortGuard® limited warranty - one of the best in the industry. The pure comfort and relaxation that melts away the stress of the day and helps you Come To Life® is the result of our dedication to quality engineering and craftsmanship. You can’t get that from an inflatable hot tub, and there’s no substitute for the well-being that comes from making a warm soak part of your ongoing wellness ritual.

Bottom line; if you’re going to own a hot tub, you deserve one that offers you the Caldera Spa difference.

A Caldera spa is the perfect spot to enjoy distraction-free quality time with loved ones.

A Great Hot Tub Can Bring Priceless Memories

Even the best inflatable hot tub is only going to offer you a few seasons (at most) of family fun. Is that really the best use of your time or money?

Life moves so fast, and children grow up so quickly. If you are considering a hot tub because you want to form deeper connections with loved ones, it makes sense to choose a product that will bring the whole family joy and well being during the years your children are at home, and beyond. When you consider long-term costs, as well as differences in hot tub maintenance needs, the choice between an inflatable hot tub versus an above-ground hot tub becomes simple.

A quality hot tub isn’t just about cabinets, shells and jets. Your hot tub haven will be a place to celebrate the precious time you have together with your partner, children, or friends. Enjoy those priceless hours in a quality hot tub that has plenty of room for everyone, and that offers clear water and a relaxing massage.

The right hot tub becomes part of your daily ritual

The right hot tub becomes part of your daily ritual.

A regular soak, in the morning or evening, can help you wash away the stress of a busy life. It can also give you the perfect place to connect with loved ones, gather your thoughts, and ease aches and pains so you’re ready to take on life’s next adventure.

A quality spa requires a bigger up-front investment than an inflatable hot tub, but that cost seems small when you consider the years of comfort, wellness, and connection with loved ones it can provide. Also, with three distinct groupings: the Utopia® Series, the Paradise® Series and the Vacanza® Series we’ve made it easy to find a Caldera model for any space or budget.

Want a Hot Tub That Brings You Lasting Joy?

Caldera Spas focuses on crafting comfortable, energy-efficient, high-performance spas with a reputation for reliability — that means you’ll enjoy the long-term relaxation and health benefits that a quality spa can offer. Each Caldera spa is carefully designed and constructed to provide a premium experience and transform your life.
